What are the precautions for undertaking ultrasound screenings?

Patients should be noted that 4 hours of fasting is required prior to ultrasound of upper abdomen. It is acceptable to drink water during fasting, but not too much. The purpose of fasting is to allow the gallbladder to fill up with bile and expand in size, which can be easier to identify if there is tumour, polyp or stone inside the gallbladder.

Under the circumstances of ultrasound of pelvis/ prostate/ urinary bladder, a full bladder is required by drinking a large amount of water. Drink until there is an urge to urinate, otherwise it will result in over-filling of the bladder, which may affect the result of the examination. Ultrasound can pass through the full bladder and capture a better imaging of the organs to be checked, therefore increasing the accuracy and reducing possible deviations.

What is the difference in between Mammogram and Ultrasound of Breast?

During a mammogram, the radiographer will use the apparatus to press hard on the breast, then the radiograph of breast issues will be obtained on an X-ray negative. Any case of micro-calcification can be detected by mammogram, and could be a key factor to determine if there is possibility of having cancerous cells.

Alternatively, for the ultrasound of breast, it transmits high-frequency sound waves to the breast tissues through an apparatus, and then converts the feedback from the sound waves into an image, which can then diagnose the condition of the breast. The ultrasound of breast can distinguish between a substantial tumour and a cyst.

The functions among the two imaging methodology are genuinely different, they are irreplaceable but mutually complementary. It is recommended that only female aged 35 years or above should take mammogram, as the efficiency will be lowered for younger women whose breast density is too dense for mammogram.

Why is it necessary to receive DEXA Bone Densitometry (Spine and Hip)?

DEXA Bone Densitometry uses two different energy of X-Ray beams on lumbar spine and hip region to measure bone mineral density. The whole procedure is safe, painless and is the most prevalent screening to assess bone loss resulting in osteoporosis.

It is common that the bone mass will begin to fall after the age of 35, especially for the females who are postmenopausal. It is therefore recommended for any individual aged 60 years or above to undertake the diagnosis of DEXA Bone Densitometry, which could help follow-up with the issue of bone loss, and consult the doctors in regard to medical reports.
