What is the principle of rapid antigen test?
An antigen is a molecule or molecular structure present in a pathogen, including bacteria and virus, and will trigger an immune response when it is detected in the human body. In general, bacterial antigens occur on the surface of the cells, and they will usually be identified at the upper respiratory tract during the preliminary stage (approximately 2nd – 3rd day after infection), and thus can be used as the infection marker. The procedures for the test is simple and easy, gently insert the swab into nostrils for sample collection, then can observe the result in 15 minutes, and it is not necessary to send the samples to laboratories for results, which can save much more time. Some testing products in the market may request for deep throat saliva or blood sampling, which they are not considered as antigen test.
