What is the purpose of cancer marker profile test?

Cancer markers, also named as tumour markers, are substances produced by the cancerous cells and could be identified by blood test. The cancer markers could be used to indicate the possibilities of cancer, with the concentration of the substances in the blood. However, the tumour markers can also be made by healthy cells, thus it is recommended to improve the accuracy of cancer diagnosis by taking further cancer screenings and following doctor’s advices. There are three major types of cancer markers available: (1) Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA), (2) Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), (3) Cancer Antigen (CA). If any individual is sharing family history of having cancers, it is suggested to consult the doctors and undergo regular cancer marker profile tests for tracking and referencing. If there is any sign of uprising index, one should seek for the doctors immediately and proceed with the appropriate follow-up actions.  On the other hand, in order to reduce the chance of misunderstanding and unnecessary panics, the reports of cancer marker profile test should be delivered and interpreted by the doctors instead.

What are the differences in between X-Ray Screenings and Ultrasound Screenings?

Both X-Ray and Ultrasound screenings are used to serve for diagnostic purpose, any unusual condition could be located with the medical imaging technology. Although ultrasonography and X-Rays belong to the same family, they are having dissimilar applications.

In the course of X-Ray screenings, X-Rays will be emitted and passing through the human body. Bones contain a high concentration of calcium and relatively higher atomic number, and therefore X-Rays will not be able to penetrate. Eventually, the bones become visible by showing in white on the radiograph, and be useful to detect any possible defect in the system. The application of X-Rays is broad, including DEXA for bone densitometry, X-Ray for chest, mammogram for breast and etc. X-Ray screening is relatively simpler and more convenient, yet not all age groups are applicable. As claimed by the medical experts, DEXA is recommended for any individual aged 60 years or above, while mammogram is recommended for any woman aged 35 years or above.

Regarding ultrasonography, it uses high frequency sound waves to manifest images of inside organs. Before the examination, a special lubricating jelly will be applied on the skin surface. When the transducer sends high-frequency sound waves through the body, the waves will echo after reaching an internal structure. The echoes, with different intensity and time, are subsequently reflected back to project real-time images, allowing the operators to analyze the situation. Ultrasound screening is generally effective at imagine the internal organs, including the upper abdomen (liver, spleen, gallbladder and etc.), pelvis, breast, thyroid glands, kidney, bladder and etc. Ultrasound is by far the safest diagnostic examination without any known risks. There is no limitation upon the application of ultrasound checkup.

Who should be taking an early detection of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC)?

According to the report from World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018, the incidence rate of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) in Hong Kong is almost 5-6 times more than the average in global context. In spite of age, gender and background, there is always a possibility for an individual to be diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC). Since the symptoms of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is easy to be mixed up with the upper respiratory tract infection, there is a tendency that more than 80% patients are diagnosed with the advanced stages. The common symptoms include headache, stuffy nose, tinnitus, nosebleeds, hoarseness, hearing loss, dysphagia and etc. Taking the screening of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) at a preliminary stage could yield a prompt detection of the disease, thus effectively increasing the survival rate of the patients by taking the treatments within the golden hours. Furthermore, the sensitivity and specificity of the test reached at least 90%, which means to be able to provide a more reliable result for the patients, and could be used to determine for the next step.
